Acer rubrum ‘Karpick’ is a deciduous tree with a narrow form, growing approximately 40-50 feet tall and about 15-20 feet wide. Its striking features include red flowers in dense clusters that appear in early spring before the leaves emerge, red twigs and buds, and green lobed leaves that show shades of yellow to red in fall. The cultivar ‘Karpick’ is male, and is especially noted for its compact width compared to many red maples.
Plant in an area with full sun to part shade in well-drained soil that retains some moisture; this maple thrives in medium to wet soils and prefers slightly acidic conditions. It is adaptable to a range of soils, shows good tolerance to wet soil and air pollution, and handles cold well. Keep maintenance low; however watch for pests such as aphids, leafhoppers, scale, and potential disease issues like fungal leaf spot or root rot.
